There is a moment every summer when the rhythm of Auch Estate changes. Before dawn has fully broken across the Perthshire hills, vehicles begin to arrive, dogs pace eagerly in anticipation, and familiar faces gather with flasks of tea in hand. It is not simply another working day; it is the beginning of one of the most important traditions in the farming calendar.
For generations, gathering, marking, and shearing have marked the turning of the seasons, bringing together neighbours, families, and estate staff with a shared purpose—to care for the flock that has shaped these hills for centuries.
High on the hill, the sheep are scattered across vast expanses of moorland. From a distance they appear as tiny white dots against the green landscape, but reaching them requires experience, patience, and exceptional sheepdogs.

Every Sheep Tells a Story
As the sheep arrive at the handling system, the pace quickens but the care never changes. One by one, every animal is checked. Ear tags are inspected, condition assessed and any treatment given where required. Rams with their distinctive spiral horns are examined carefully, each representing years of breeding and the future of the flock. The Sound of the Shearing Shed
Soon the steady hum of the shearing machines fills the shed. An experienced shearer moves with remarkable rhythm, removing each fleece in one continuous piece while keeping the sheep comfortable throughout. Around 10,000 sheep are shorn during the season at Auch Estate. Every fleece is lifted away, rolled, sorted, and prepared for its next journey, while the sheep leave lighter and ready to return to the hills.
Returning Home
By the end of the day, the pens fall quiet once more. The freshly shorn flock makes its way back onto the open hill, disappearing into the landscape until only small white shapes remain against the horizon. To many, it is simply another beautiful Scottish scene.
